Colour Mixing

Another activity of our Science Week is colour mixing.

The children are experimenting with paints to see what other colours they can make by mixing 2 together.

Chromatography Detectives

This week is Science Week and for our topic we are looking at Light and Shadows. Today we have been investigating Chromatography.

Someone left a note in our classroom, but forgot to put their name on it. In order to find out who this person was, the Green and Blue groups decided to have a look at their pens and test them against the note.

First of all we had to collect the pens from various members of staff to test.

We labelled the pens so we knew who they belonged to!

Which pen do you think wrote the note?

After making our predictions, we dissected the note to provide us with a sample to test, and in order to make it a fair experiment we wrote the same word with the pens we had collected.

Both the test word and the sample word were dipped in water and held up to allow the ink to spread.

Once all the pens had been dipped they were lay in a tray with their sample to compare. We looked at the colours that separated and spread from the ink, and we measured the spread to compare to our sample.

We found that some of the inks spread up to 7cm, however some inks did not run at all when they were put in the water. Some of the inks had a grey spread whilst others were blues and purples.

I wonder what would happen if you tried this test with other colour inks?

We will have similar experiments running this Thursday afternoon during our science fair, along with many other Light and Shadow activities.

Morning Meeting

This week we are focusing on what 'takers' are and how they behave.

These are some of the ideas we have come up with.

We looked at what the difference is between givers and takers.

We the looked at what givers and takers do in certain places, like
In the playground
At a club
At the park.

This is what we came up with.

Next week we will finish off this topic by talking about matchers. We will keep you posted!

Here are their dreams and aspirations!

Jack would like to be a bus driver so he can drive people to places.
Harley would like to be a professional street dancer.
Ellie-Mai wants to be an artist.
Ryan would like to be in a band and sing.
Kimberlie wants to be an artist because her big sister does it.
Leigh wants to paint all day.

Kaitlyn wants to be shadow the hedgehog so she can go fast.
Chloe wants to be a ballerina.
Annie-May would like to be a doctor as she likes kids.
Trey wants to work for LIVES because my Dad and Mum works for them.
Wiktoria wants to be a rock star as she can sing.

Rubie wants to be an ice-cream lady.
Jaiden would like to be a footballer because he loves football.
Thomas wants to be Jedi as it's what he has always dreamed of.
Harry would like to take over his Dads job which is building houses and patios.
Ebony wants to be a vet because she likes animals.

Some children didn't know what they wanted to be when they grew up, which is absolutely fine!

We talked about how working hard at school would send them on the right path to begin fulfilling their dreams.

Homework Menu 21/6/13

Remember you don’t have to do all of these from the list and you can create your own homework too!!

·         Look at the weights of food items in your home. Compare 2 and say which is heavier and lighter.
·         Make a crown and decorate it with a symmetrical pattern.
·         Investigate which materials in your home block light and those which allow light to shine through.
·          Pretend that you are a knight. Write a list of jobs that you are required to do. Use bullet points.

Have fun!

Castles Project Based Learning

Today we have continued with our topic of castles.

One of the activities was making crowns ready for our banquet. The children had to copy a crown modelled by an adult and then decide how to decorate it themselves.

The children played in the role-play area. They could dress up in medieval clothes, pretend to fire cannonballs over the castle wall, decorate a shield or make a symmetrical crown.

The children were also using the tuft spot area to investigate which materials allowed light from a torch to shine through.

Music linked to our topic

We have linked our music to our topic this week!wondering how?

Well, the children investigated which percussion instruments created sounds we might hear if we were living in a castle.

We have recorded the sounds for you. Just scan the QR codes with a QR code reader on your phone or iPad and see what we have been up to!

Listen to the drawbridge going down ....

Listen to the trumpets playing ....

Listen to a creaking door ...

Listen to wind blowing in the tower

Listen to swords clashing

Listen to a flag blowing....

Listen to the moat ....
