Maths challenge for the red table

The red table this week have been trying to learn all the number facts. This is such a big job, so we put this learning objective into a game.

The children were given a number between 1 and 9. They had to find all the addition and subtraction facts for that particular number.

Look what they got up to!

Creative homework in 2RW

Here is more evidence of the creative homework that has been created at home. Can you work out what the children have made?

Congratulations everyone! You are collecting lots of learning credits!

Times tables in Year 2

As part of our maths curriculum, Year 2 are required to learn some times tables off by heart. Some children are still in the process of learning how to do times sums, while others are more confident.

The following pictures show the ones we need to help the children learn. Your help is very much appreciated.

The children will eventually need to be able to quickly recall a times table fact off by heart and not in order. We are aiming for this by the end of year 2.

If you need any suggestions of how to do this, please feel free to come in and see me.

Many thanks for your support!

New links added!

Hi children and parents!
Just to let you know that I have added some more links to online stories. You can find them in the 'online stories' section. I have also added some links to webpages that have lots of stories on and activities about the stories too. Look on the right hand side of the blog!
Hope you have fun reading them over the half term!

Homework Menu 15/2/13

 · Record some division sums and turn them around to make multiplication sums. For example,
           15÷5=3
           3x5=15
· Record some addition sums and turn them around into subtraction sums. For example,
           10+5=15
           15-5=10
· Listen to the Lighthouse Keeper’s lunch on the blog and choose from any of the following activities:
Retell the story or make up your own story about a lighthouse.
Create your own ‘perfect lunch’ - draw and label the picture.
Design and make a 3D lighthouse.
Choose characters from the story and use speech bubbles to show what they could be saying.

Remember, you don't have to do anything from this list, you can make up your own!

This week is Science Week!

Mrs Wood set the children a challenge in homework this week....

She wanted to see who could find out what friction was before we started our science this week!

Harry came up with a beautiful definition of friction.....

He said it was.....

A force that slows down motion!

Well done to Harry who was the first person to offer his homework!

The children had to test different types of surfaces to see which would make the most friction and slow a car down that went down a slope.

First they had to predict which surface they thought would make the most friction.

Secondly they had to make the investigation fair.

Thirdly they had to collect the results.

I won't tell you the results because I don't want to spoil it for the rest of the groups!

Finished Chinese New Year crafts

These are the finished creations from our Friday activities! Come and see them in the classroom!

Haven't we been busy!

Preparations for Chinese New Year in Year 2

On Friday afternoon, the children were preparing for Chinese New Year.

They were given the challenge of finding out
1. What year it is at the moment.
2. What year it is going to be.
3. When Chinese New Year starts.
4. How it is celebrated.

The children could then choose a craft that either provides a new year decoration or is one of the ways Chinese people celebrate.

Chinese dragons were decorated and will be turned into puppets.

Kites were made and the children searched for either Chinese writing to copy onto the kite or a picture of the animal this year represents.

Two children created lanterns. They had the hard job of cutting out sections of red card so they could be covered in tissue paper for the light to shine through.

Children decorated cards that would be given during the celebration of the new year.

The last activity was creating an animal puppet. Harley was decorating his puppet using tissue paper.

If you wish to read how the first New Year was named an animal, copy and paste the link below. There are lots of Chinese New Year activities the children can do too.

The Mayor came to visit us!

On Thursday 7th February, the Mayor came to the school as part of her tour of Lincoln schools.

Before we had the assembly, we thought of some questions our school council members could ask.

This is a picture of the Mayor who came to see us.

Councillor Karen Lee is the 806th mayor!

Safer Internet Day

Today is our Safer Internet Day at school.

We watched a clip about Hector using the Internet. Did he know how to use it properly?

The children were thinking about sending instant messages on the Internet and how dangerous it can actually be.

They were discussing how sending information like names, address, age or school is wrong.

We also learnt that asking people to be friends who we don't know is not safe.

You can go on Hector's world website too. There is a safety button that a grown up can put on from the website that can be pressed if anything makes the children feel scared or unhappy.

Please let us know if you use this excellent resource. The website address for Hector's world is

Enjoy looking and stay safe!

Year 2 Physical Literacy Programme

We have started a physical literacy program where we do some exercises in the studio for 15 minutes every day. These exercises are going to help improve our core muscles and therefore improve our handwriting! Can you believe it!

This first exercise is called the bridge.

The second exercise is called the balloon.

The third exercise is called bunny jumps.

The fourth is called the superman!

The last one is called the cat.

Before we started this programme, the children did a handwriting assessment. They also had to copy one sentence in their neatest handwriting as many times as they could in 3 minutes.

We will repeat these assessments at the end of the programme and hopefully we are going to see an improvement!
